Inspired by the consumer products designed for Braun by industrial designer Dieter Rams, model M.1. by Anne et Valentin is a minimalist marvel.  The fluid interplay of titanium and acetate components of this Japanese made frame is ingeniously executed.

Blake Kuwahara

Josephson Opticians will be pleased to host an exclusive appearance by designer Blake Kuwahara at our Flagship location Saturday June 17th.  A trunk show featuring his eponymous range of sunglasses and optical frames will take place between 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Josh Josephson first met Blake Kuwahara several decades ago after he created and designed the remarkably innovative and  motif enhanced  KATA Eyewear brand. He then learned they had something in common. Both where graduate optometrists. Blake earned a doctorate of optometry degree from UC Berkeley and spent a short time there as a visiting professor/researcher prior to his career in design.

Josh regards Blake as one of the most talented eyewear designers in the world.  His groundbreaking application of engineering and production techniques to create texture and detail for KATA Eyewear set presidents of  industry standards for construction and quality. Josephson Opticians was a local purveyor of KATA Eyewear, as well as Blake’s designs for the Isaac Mizrahi and Hanae Mori collections.

Blake Kuwahara

Blake Kuwahara is the founder and creative director of FOCUS GROUP WEST (FGW), the Los Angeles-based, multi-disciplinary boutique design firm that takes a comprehensive approach to branding and designing for eyewear and fashion companies. Blake’s membership in the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) is recognition of his influence in the fashion and optical industries.

Sources of  the designer’s  inspiration

Frames  from Blake Kuwahara’s current collection are wearable art forms. Hand crafted in Japan, the look of each model is evocative of sculptural forms, both natural and man-made, as well as modernist architectural elements.

The collection reflects the designer’s paradoxical influences. Blake’s appreciation of minimalist fashion accounts for the simple and sleek outward appearance of his frames. But his regard for ornate jewelry, distressed and textured surfaces is evident and conveyed in the complexity of each frame’s construction.

Employing laborious production techniques and skilled handwork, an inner silhouette is encased in a translucent acetate outer shape. This seamless fusion of two frames and the juxtaposition of contrasting form and color create a design tension that is thoroughly modern and distinctive. A remarkable sense of depth and dimension is achieved by this mode of construction.

Additional hand rendered  nuances,  such as scratching, scriving and beveling of surfaces, lend character and intentional variation to the tactile qualities of these exceptional creations.

We invite you to join us in the appreciation of the Blake Kuwahara collection at Josephson Opticians’ Flagship location.

In all seasons and environments the exposure of our delicate eyes to ultra violet radiation is a modern concern and preoccupation. In the interest of enjoying an immediate moment in the sun and as a preventative measure against accumulative retinal damage, the wearing of sunglasses which provide complete protection from the entire spectrum of UV radiation is crucial.

Lenses which are polarized and those which are anti-reflective coated will diminish additional glare and aberrations.

One’s personal style need not be compromised in the interest of ocular health! Currently in stock  at Josephson Opticians locations throughout Toronto are impressive selections of contemporary sunglasses  featuring precisely ground lenses of exceptional quality.
