Josephson Opticians Logo

The precisely executed sportswear of designer Mitsuhiro Matsuda was coveted throughout the 80s and 90s. With boutiques in Manhattan, Paris and his native Japan, he introduced the world to an aesthetic based on a blend of English tailoring with traditional Japanese techniques.

Following Matsuda’s death in 2008 and a short absence from the market,  the last remaining product to bear his name is the eyewear line. It is imbued with his sense of style and reflects his appreciation of craftsmanship.

Many of the artisans who made Matsuda glasses up until the late 90s are involved in their creation today. Like the first line, today’s Matsuda eyewear is crafted by hand in the small town of Sabae, Japan of only the finest materials, including celluloid acetate, titanium, sterling silver, 18K solid gold, and 22.5K gold plating.

Our most recent arrivals feature new matte acetate colours including grey crystal, champagne and gradient lavender.  The beautiful laser etched filigree on each frame’s metal components is a true hallmark of  the past and current collections. New metal finishes include brushed silver, brushed gold and rose gold.

We invite you to marvel at the new assortment of Matsuda Eyewear at Josephson Opticians’ Flagship location.

The HENAU eyewear line consists of contemporary styles rooted in a tradition of hand-craftsmanship.  Designer Marc Delagrange’s affiliation with the Belgian brand began in the 1980’s and his bold, voluminous designs remain consistently  avant-garde and unique.

Hand drawn concepts  of characteristically funky yet functional models become tangible forms once crafted by expert technicians in France and Japan.

The depth and dimension of each frame is enhanced by dynamic and unconventional  colour pairings. More substantial in appearance than finer metal frames, these exceptional creations distinguish themselves from understated alternatives.

Offered in a great variety of  size  and colours, an eclectic selection of shapes from the latest HENAU release will soon be featured at Josephson Opticians’ Flagship location.

The Latest La LOOPs

28 Oct
2017

La LOOPs are the most useful pieces of fine jewelry one could invest in. They are both fashionable and functional, ensuring that frames are close at hand when not on the face.   Patented for utility and design, the 360-degree hinges on either side of the loop keep your glasses in place.  The hinges allow the loop to lay flat and the necklace part to move independently; and, gravity will keep the glasses securely in the loop.

The most recent La LOOPs to arrive at Josephson Opticians  feature natural materials in a palette of muted and subtle tones and matted finishes. The masculine dog tag  style loop  in a  satin silver finish  is now paired with an Italian  leather cord dyed navy blue.   New to the collection is a fine strand of  multi-coloured quartz beads paired with a silver plated loop.

Also new are strands of substantial autumn hued jasper quartz beads paired with a satin gold loop and a  glossy strand of smaller quartz  beads  paired with an antiqued finished silver loop.

The classic and hefty silver plated Clifton loop is now available with a camel coloured braided leather cord.  A more delicate option is a silver plated loop paired with a refined strand of  ivory coloured quartz beads.

These exceptional additions to our selection of La LOOPs will be available soon at Josephson Opticians locations throughout Toronto.

2017

An eclectic mix of styles, comprised of multiple materials and colours on a single frame, are now in stock at our shops throughout Toronto. Josephson Opticians offers these masculine options for your consideration:

Pure titanium rim inserts mounted within a beta titanium frame reinforce durable and light weight models such as Ken produced by Bevel Eyewear.

Robert Marc’s latest collection for men consists of artisanal, custom made frames from France.  New colour pairings such as Cobblestone are created by a seamless fusion of two complimentary patterns of acetate along the length of the temple.

Model Theory 1 from Face a Face is a refined acetate frame featuring a subdued matted finish accentuated by an aura of  vivid colour.

Hand crafted in Japan, the customized components of Dita frames require up to 320 separate steps to assemble in a production process which can take up to 8 months to complete. The Statesman Three features a laser etched Titanium rim ,temples and nose pads.

Inspired by the consumer products designed for Braun by industrial designer Dieter Rams, model M.1. by Anne et Valentin is a minimalist marvel.  The fluid interplay of titanium and acetate components of this Japanese made frame is ingeniously executed.

Blake Kuwahara

22 May
2017

Josephson Opticians will be pleased to host an exclusive appearance by designer Blake Kuwahara at our Flagship location Saturday June 17th.  A trunk show featuring his eponymous range of sunglasses and optical frames will take place between 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.

Josh Josephson first met Blake Kuwahara several decades ago after he created and designed the remarkably innovative and  motif enhanced  KATA Eyewear brand. He then learned they had something in common. Both where graduate optometrists. Blake earned a doctorate of optometry degree from UC Berkeley and spent a short time there as a visiting professor/researcher prior to his career in design.

Josh regards Blake as one of the most talented eyewear designers in the world.  His groundbreaking application of engineering and production techniques to create texture and detail for KATA Eyewear set presidents of  industry standards for construction and quality. Josephson Opticians was a local purveyor of KATA Eyewear, as well as Blake’s designs for the Isaac Mizrahi and Hanae Mori collections.

Blake Kuwahara

Blake Kuwahara is the founder and creative director of FOCUS GROUP WEST (FGW), the Los Angeles-based, multi-disciplinary boutique design firm that takes a comprehensive approach to branding and designing for eyewear and fashion companies. Blake’s membership in the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) is recognition of his influence in the fashion and optical industries.

Sources of  the designer’s  inspiration

Frames  from Blake Kuwahara’s current collection are wearable art forms. Hand crafted in Japan, the look of each model is evocative of sculptural forms, both natural and man-made, as well as modernist architectural elements.

The collection reflects the designer’s paradoxical influences. Blake’s appreciation of minimalist fashion accounts for the simple and sleek outward appearance of his frames. But his regard for ornate jewelry, distressed and textured surfaces is evident and conveyed in the complexity of each frame’s construction.

Employing laborious production techniques and skilled handwork, an inner silhouette is encased in a translucent acetate outer shape. This seamless fusion of two frames and the juxtaposition of contrasting form and color create a design tension that is thoroughly modern and distinctive. A remarkable sense of depth and dimension is achieved by this mode of construction.

Additional hand rendered  nuances,  such as scratching, scriving and beveling of surfaces, lend character and intentional variation to the tactile qualities of these exceptional creations.

We invite you to join us in the appreciation of the Blake Kuwahara collection at Josephson Opticians’ Flagship location.

The arrival of our new selection of frames from Gold & Wood Eyepieces was eagerly anticipated although we realized  that, as the adage suggests, “good things take time”. Each pair is patiently handcrafted in Luxembourg with meticulous care and attention to detail.

With a regard for traditions and heritage, models are often named after established institutions and sites. The model depicted above is the namesake of  the village of Orsay in northern France which was established in the year 999.

This style combines delicacy and strength in perfect balance. The titanium front is carefully machined to accommodate the aluminum décor.

In all seasons and environments the exposure of our delicate eyes to ultra violet radiation is a modern concern and preoccupation. In the interest of enjoying an immediate moment in the sun and as a preventative measure against accumulative retinal damage, the wearing of sunglasses which provide complete protection from the entire spectrum of UV radiation is crucial.

Lenses which are polarized and those which are anti-reflective coated will diminish additional glare and aberrations.

One’s personal style need not be compromised in the interest of ocular health! Currently in stock  at Josephson Opticians locations throughout Toronto are impressive selections of contemporary sunglasses  featuring precisely ground lenses of exceptional quality.
