Eyewear Innovations

In developing the theme for their latest collection the forward thinking design team behind BEVEL Eyewear reflected upon the achievements of some independent spirits of the past.

New models are named after boundary-pressing figures from a variety of fields and disciplines. Susan B. Anthony (American social reformer and feminist activist), Marie Curie ( physicist and chemist), and Thomas Edison (inventor) are some of the innovators sighted as sources of inspiration.

As though  through some form of transmutation, conventional acetates were alerted to appear more contemporary and distinctive.
BEVEL’s craftsmen polished and then matted their new models to produce a smooth finish. The frames’ edges were chiseled to give each piece a raw, 3-dimensional look. It’s a minor alteration that makes a big impression.

Seven new colours, including Orchid and Royal Blue and Saddle Tortoise, seem to swirl and morph as light plays upon the matted and opalescent frame surfaces.

BEVEL Eyewear’s innovative and hand-crafted collections can be found at all Josephson Opticians locations throughout Toronto.

Bolder styles, such as Odorono, are now available with translucent coloured frame fronts. This feature of the Xtra series offers the classic model more depth and complexity.

In 1978  vanguard and visionary Alain Mikli opened his design studio in Paris.  His illustrious career and innovative eyewear creations have inspired generations of devotees. Few have dared to produce imitations, but many collaborations, with the likes of Philip Stark,  Claude Montana, Jill Sanders and Delfina Delettrez, have occurred over the decades. Josephson Opticians has had a long relationship with the designer and we have had the privilege to facilitated rare personal appearances on occasion.

Alain Mikli’s recent designs incorporate unconventional combinations of colours and complex laminations of patterned acetates. Full of volume, these sculptural forms have a luminous quality and are remarkably exuberant.

As influential as his own creations are, it is worth noting that Mikli’s engagement with art is a source of his inspiration. The intense visual stimulation of the work of  minimalist artist Sol Lewitt and  post modernist designer Ettore Sottsas  have had an effect on Mikli.

Jim Lambie’s Metal Box (Dancing Orchid) 2014

James “Jim” Lambie is a contemporary visual artist, and was shortlisted for the 2005 Turner Prize. His sculptures and instillations explore the psychology of space and colour. Lambie’s work, and that of Sonia Delaunay, who cofounded the Orphism art movement c. 1912, inspired Mikli’s latest offerings. Their design principals and concepts have been masterfully applied to the creation of his impressive eyewear.

Delauney was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre.

We invite you to view Alain Mikli’s unique collection at Josephson Opticians locations throughout Toronto.

Like the enduring allure of feline attributes, beautiful frames of lasting quality will continue to entice and charm.  New, feminine  models from Dita Eyewear and Claire Goldsmith feature hallmarks of old world craftsmanship while affecting the aura of the cat.

Hand crafted in Japan, Dita models Rebella and Willow are both bold and seductive. Their sleek lines emulate the stealth and supple grace of a cat. These frames should appeal to the free spirited and rebellious!

Offerings from Claire Goldsmith’s Legacy Collection pay homage to the spirit of vintage styling. The rich warm colouring of model Rixon in tortoise and plum is ideal for the season.  The style is romantic and versatile. A woman wearing them could appear as confident or as aloof as a cat, depending on her mood!

The most recent arrivals to Josephson Optician’s Flagship location are the creations of designers Jason and Karen Kirk.  Hand crafted in France, Kirk & Kirk frames are unique because they are fashioned from a special grade of Italian acrylic and require no internal metal reinforcement of the temples. The material retains its adjustment and provides consistent comfort and a stable fit.

Models from the Vivarium collection feature 925 sterling silver or 9 carat gold pins cast in Birmingham England. A selection of beasts, including a lion, a  ram and a stallion, are available for your close study and observation!

The rich and varied palette of colours  featured in the Kaleidoscope collection is unique to acrylic. Layers of differing hues are laminated in order to create depth and dimension.  Translucence and clarity are enhanced by a high degree of polishing.

We are expecting the  vibrant qualities of these styles to inspire and charm the free spirits and vanguards among us!
